The 2024 election brought a few changes to the Denton Central Appraisal District.  While the new law had good intentions, it fell short in its promise to provide the taxpayers of Denton County representation within the Appraisal District.    

The Denton Central Appraisal District Board of Directors is made up of 9 Members; 5 nominated for appointment by the taxing entities, 3 elected at large from the taxpayers plus the Tax Assessor Collector who is now a VOTING member of the Board of Directors.  

Do you want to guess who has the advantage?

My most frequently heard complaint from taxpayers is "my taxes are too high!" Consequently the Appraisal District gets blamed. The fact is this: the Appraisal District only sets property values, it's the elected politicians within the "taxing entities" that set the tax rates. That's right, the same taxing entities that have the majority of votes on the board! It's the City councils, County commissioners, and School board members that establish the tax rates that are applied to your property value. 

Get involved, Get out and vote!

Remember this information the next time you decide you don't have time to get out and vote, or you don't want to get involved in researching the candidates. 

In 24 months of serving my elected position, I have not missed a single board meeting, I don't rubber stamp approval of actions that benefit the taxing entities and I continue to fight for taxpayers to be treated fairly in assessment of their property values.
